Back Again

I’m inching closer to having it done, people. I’ll have another chapter of A Marriage of Inconvenience finished this week. I’m currently writing Sookie and Hadley’s lunch time meeting. I predict bloodshed before the chapter is finished.

There’s something I’ve been wondering about for a few days now so I thought I’d just make a post and ask…

All Human and canon fics. What’s your opinion on them? Do you prefer AH? Or are you canon lovers at heart? I like a mixture. Some of my favourite stories are AH, but I tend to read more canon fics. And to the authors, do you like writing AH? Does it give you more freedom?

I’m genuinely curious as I came up with an AH idea yesterday. I’ve only written one so far. The last option is a joke by the way. Also I’m not sure why there’s a question mark at the end of it. 🙂

I answered “both”, but if I had to choose one or the other, I guess I’d say I prefer canon/AU. There are tons of AH stories out there by some really great authors that I absolutely love, though.

As a writer (if you could call me that,) I’ve only written one story, a WIP, and it’s AH. My story is AH because it began in my mind, and in outline form, in another fandom, but I wasn’t feeling very inspired to continue it. Once I discovered SVM and True Blood, the story began to change shape in my mind and I re-started it as an SVM/TB fic with Eric and Sookie. I’ve remained inspired by those characters, despite the horrible treatment we’ve received from both CH and AB/Bucky, so I’m now (finally!) nearing the end of the story.

Story ideas don’t come easily to me the way they do a lot of other FF authors, but I do have a canon/AU idea rattling around in my brain for my next story…if I ever get that far.

I was actually reading your story the other week. I have to say I really liked it. I read all the chapters in like three days. I’m sure you’d do great on a canon story if you get round to writing it.

I usually stick to canon/AU, but I’ve been wanting to branch out.

Thank you for reading my story! I’m so flattered that you like it! It makes me incredibly happy when my own favorite authors read my work and enjoy it.

Both…True blood show had its greatest and worst moments, but a couple of awesome characters. Sometimes with the true blood fics the writers tend to write Sookie more annoying than usual. I like angst (every once in a while), but some writers practically soak their fics in angst…and then I get tired and lose interest because Sookie is always either whining or bitching. JS….

I can agree with that. I’ve read a few where Sookie acts like that. When writing a fic that’s based in the True Blood verse I always try to write Sookie smarter and more level headed. I’m not saying I always succeed though.

I like both, but I have a tendency to read/write cannon. I’ve only tried writing one TB/SVM fic, but it isn’t really following any of the plot from either. I only like TB because it introduced Godric.

My opinion, fwiw: I can’t say that I consider AH stories as being much more than a generic romance/adventure story where the lead characters just happen to be named “Eric” and “Sookie”. To me, part of the lure of TB/SVM fics is that these stories revolve around the supernatural world: vampires and how humans and other creatures deal with the differences between vampires and their natures versus the rest of the world, and their natures. I like exploring the similarities and the differences between (especially) vampires and the other species. I like it “supe-style”, lol. AH screams “just another romance/adventure story” to me. That’s why I rarely read them.

Canon? To me – and, again, this is JUST my opinion – the moment a writer changes even one single thing from the books or tv show, it’s no longer a canon story, thankfully, which takes us to my second not-quite-humble opinion: if I wanted to read canon, I’d just re-read CH. I see absolutely no point in following canon – it’s already been done (pretty good at first, then craptastically by the end) by the original writer.

I want to read something new, something where the original plot screw-ups get fixed (TB or book), something where Sookie isn’t a spineless, ignorant doormat and where Eric isn’t a thoughtless, self-serving jerk, something where Bill either isn’t in the story at all, or where his agenda is discovered early-on and he’s brought to a bloody form of justice. I want YOUR plot; not someone else’s.

I don’t want to have CH’s canon, or AB’s canon, thrown back at me (UNLESS IT INVOLVES ME SOME GODRIC…THEN BRING IT ON, BAY’BE!) – I want to see how the writer’s awesome, devious, sweetly squirrelly little mind takes the story, ya know?

I totally agree with what Meridiean said so wonderfully. Also, (while I may get flogged for saying this) you do supernatural stories so well that I almost feel like another generic AH story would be unworthy of your creative talent, especially when you have so many amazing WIPs right now between this and sunsetqueens.

I agree on pretty much all of what you said. I’m a big fan of both reading and writing AU fics which is probably obvious. I’ll usually just take the basic facts and then twisted them into my own stories. I find it a lot more enjoyable.

I’m plotting out a fic now that will be AU to the 9th degree. What’s fun about it is you have to really delve into the story and characters, giving them back stories that make sense.

I often say if I want to read straight up canon, no deviation, then I’ll read the books or watch the show.

I’ll be honest and say I’m really looking forward to this new idea. I send messages to my beta almost nightly with new ideas for it. It’s different from anything I’ve done before as it’s not a traditional Eric and Sookie story. But that’s fun, right?

Hey, as long as it’s making your brain happy, and it’s re-energizing your muses, I say go for it. It’s YOUR pen and YOUR paper, as it were – use at will. 😀

I prefer canon. All human doesn’t seem to have the punch of vampires, fairies, werewolves, weres & demons. All human is just a romance story with the characters of the same names. 🙂

A lot of people seem to. I’ll probably stick to canon myself. I actually find it easier to write.

And thank you for all of your reviews. I’ve really enjoyed receiving them. I’m glad you like my stories.

You do realize that the point of this poll is, basically, moot, right? I mean, after all, if you write it, we will read it…you ~ARE~ the QofA5, after all…(**insert subliminal “NO A/H” messages here**…)

I chose canon. I’ve read some excellent AH stories though. For me, the issue with AH stories is that they could be about anyone, just change the names. The thing that makes Eric & Sookie unique is their “otherness”. And that is lost in an AH story. I will give an AH story a chance, depending on the author and how the first couple of chapters go. I have a number of them saved to my favorites on ff. so I’ve obviously found good ones.
Having said that, you should write what comes to you. I’ll look forward to reading it regardless.

It was my love for True Blood and SVM that brought me to reading fanfiction in the first place. However the way CH’s last book turned out and the way True Blood has let us all down, I’m having a hard time reading canon right now. There are some great canon and AH fics out there and I’m sure we all know the best of them. Til I get over the feeling I have of being let down by those mentioned above all I can read right now is AH. They tend to give me what I want right now and that is HEA for Eric and Sookie. I will read whatever you decide to write.
